This last item is of great importance. A couple of weeks ago, residents from Davis Bay, Selma Park and Wilson Creek (NOT the DAVIS BAY-WILSON CREEK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION) passed the following resolutions.
To: District of Sechelt Council
As concerned residents of the Sunshine Coast who are dependant upon the Chapman Creek Watershed for potable water, we request the following actions from the District of Sechelt:
August 8, 2007
Wilson Creek and Davis Bay Community Hall Meeting (NOT the DAVIS BAY-WILSON CREEK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION)
Results of Meeting by Davis Bay Concerned Citizens Aug 8th 2007
These resolutions will be presented to the Mayor and Council members at their council meeting this coming Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 starting at 7:30 pm.
It is VERY IMPORTANT that we have as many concerned residents attend this council meeting to show our support to the Davis Bay Residents. As many of you already know, the District of Sechelt has a community forest licence that encompasses some 10,000 acres mostly in the Grey and Chapman Creek watersheds.(see the map)
This forest licence was approved by Mr. Greg Hemphill on December 28th, 2006 (see copy) and work must be carried out over the next five years under the Forest Stewardship Plan prepared by Sechelt Projects Inc, the private company owned by the District of Sechelt.
For further information about this Forest Stewardship Plan, please visit the Sechelt Projects Inc web site at the address below:
Some interesting information regarding the Community Forest harvesting plans from their Operational Plans:
===============================================================
At the present time Timber harvesting is the main financial opportunity for the CF. For the 5–year probationary period, the AAC is set at 20,000 m3 per year. This volume will be cut in a variety of areas using a range of retention harvesting methods that are suited to the ecosystem’s natural disturbance types.
Timber harvesting will be planned and conducted with final product in mind. Marketing of timber products will begin prior to block layout and harvesting to ensure the best value and use of the timber is achieved.
If you take a look at the Community Forest Map (attached) and notice that at least 50% of the community forest licence is in the two watersheds (Grey & Chapman Creeks) then one can only speculate how Sechelt Projects Inc is going to harvest 100,000 m3 of timber over the next five years WITHOUT logging in either of the two watersheds?
This is why we need to bring our concerns to the District of Sechelt and ensure that the Mayor and Council hear our community voice regarding our drinking water.
Apart from the damage that WFP is presently inflicting on our watershed, the District of Sechelt thru its privately owned company (Sechelt Projects Inc) seems destined to havest timber in the drinking watersheds at some point in time.
So please come out and join with your fellow citizens and lets pack the Sechelt Council Chambers this coming Wednesday Evening.
Also this coming Thursday, there will be a “talk show” on Coast Cable channel 11 with guests Mayor Cam Reid, Mayor Barry Janyk and SCRD Chair Ed Steeves. The call in phone number is: (604) 886-8565, unfortunately I do not know when the show airs, but perhaps someone out there will have the answer to this question. Thanks.
This may prove to be a splendid opportunity to allow the “voice” of our community speak to our elected leaders and let them know about our concerns regarding our drinking water. Please encourage your friends and neighbors to attend the Sechelt Council meeting and also phone the TV show.
